Are Asbestos Fibres Visible to the Human Eye?

Are asbestos fibres visible to the human eye? The simple answer is NO. Asbestos fibres cannot be seen by the human eye; they are microscopic in size, with diameters ranging from 0.1 to 20 micrometers. In comparison, asbestos fibres can be up to 700 times smaller than a human hair.

The Dangers and Types of Asbestos Fibres

Asbestos is primarily made up of six minerals that occur naturally: chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite. Chrysotile is the most common type and has long, curly fibres, while amosite and crocidolite fibres are typically straight and needle-like. Regardless of the type or shape, all asbestos fibres are not visible to the naked eye.

Chrysotile is the most commonly used type of asbestos, It is mostly found in various construction materials such as roof tiles, corrugated sheets, cement boards, gutters, downpipes, soil pipes, soffit boards, boiler flues, and gaskets.

Chrysotile asbestos is considered to be relatively safer compared to other forms because during its manufacture, it is mixed with other materials to create a cement slurry. This mixing process binds the fibres within the material, reducing the risk of exposure to the fibres.
