Asbestos Roof Disposal in Belfast (case study)
We were recently contacted by a customer in Belfast, County Antrim regarding the disposal of asbestos roof slates that had been removed from their roof more than five years ago. Although the slates had been correctly packaged in asbestos bags, they were never transported to a disposal facility and remained stored at the property. The customer contacted Removerr to arrange the safe collection and disposal of the asbestos waste.

Asbestos Roof Disposal in Belfast
The property was a typical three-bedroom semi-detached house in Belfast. Approximately 750 to 800 asbestos roof slates had been removed when the original roof was replaced several years earlier.
The roofing contractor had correctly packaged the asbestos slates using approved asbestos waste bags, consisting of a red asbestos waste bag sealed inside a clear outer asbestos bag.
Following the completion of the roofing works, the packaged slates were stored beside a garden shed at the property, where they remained for more than five years. The customer later explained that due to work commitments and spending extended periods away from home, arranging disposal had simply been postponed over time.
Rewrapping Deteriorated Asbestos Bags
Before collection, I advised the customer that some of the bags might require rewrapping due to prolonged exposure to the elements. Although asbestos bags are suitable for transporting asbestos materials, they are not intended for long-term outdoor storage and can deteriorate over time.
Upon arriving at the property, I carried out an inspection of the packaged asbestos slates. Approximately 70% of the bags remained in good condition and were suitable for transport without any additional work. The remaining 30% had deteriorated over time, leaving some of the asbestos slates partially exposed.
In Northern Ireland, asbestos waste must be either double-bagged or double-wrapped before it can be accepted at an authorised disposal facility. To comply with these requirements, all damaged bags were rewrapped using suitable asbestos packaging before the waste was loaded for transport.

Once all asbestos slates had been correctly packaged, they were transported to an authorised asbestos disposal facility for disposal.
Asbestos Collection Northern Ireland
Removerr provides asbestos collection and disposal services throughout Northern Ireland. We regularly collect and dispose of asbestos cement roof slates, asbestos corrugated roofing sheets, asbestos boiler flues, asbestos guttering and downpipes, asbestos cement boards, asbestos soil pipes and other non-licensed asbestos materials from domestic and commercial properties.
Before any asbestos waste can be collected, the required paperwork must be submitted to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. The NIEA currently requires a minimum of three working days‘ notice before asbestos can be transported, excluding weekends and public holidays. Removerr takes care of this process on behalf of customers and provides all necessary paperwork relating to the collection and disposal of the asbestos waste.
Depending on the circumstances, Removerr can either remove the asbestos materials directly from the property or provide a collection-only service where the asbestos has already been removed and correctly packaged. In situations where asbestos materials have not been packaged in accordance with disposal requirements, we can arrange for the materials to be double-wrapped or double-bagged prior to transport.
