The customer reached out requesting the removal of a large bunded oil tank to make way for a new home extension, with building work due to commence at the end of November. The tank was no longer in use, but needed to be fully removed and disposed of to clear the area.
On arrival, the tank appeared to be in relatively good condition. The homeowner noted that it had no known faults. However, upon closer inspection, it was clear that the inner tank had failed, and the oil had leaked into the outer bund, which had successfully contained the spill.
This scenario highlights one of the major benefits of bunded tanks, their double-skin construction helps prevent environmental contamination in the event of a leak.

The Process of Removing a Large Bunded Tank
The bunded tank in question had an estimated capacity of around 1,450 litres and featured a particularly large outer skin. Due to access restrictions, specifically a narrow garden gate, it wasn’t possible to remove the tank in one piece. To begin the process, we pumped out approximately 12 twenty-litre drums of waste heating oil that had collected in the bund.
Once the oil was removed, the outer bund layer was carefully cut away on-site to allow access to the inner tank. With the outer casing removed, we were able to extract the slimmer internal tank through the restricted gate opening. The remaining bund was then dismantled and removed separately.
Both the waste oil and the oil tank where transported to a facility that was equipped to handle both form of hazardous waste.
