Computer Monitor Disposal: LCD, LED, and CRT Screens

Removerr recently carried out a computer monitor disposal project for an IT company based in London, with the collection taking place from a storage unit at the M1 Belfast Self Storage, Kennedy Way, M1 Business Park.

The company had instructed us to clear the unit, which contained around 100 LCD monitors, along with keyboards and stands. As LCD monitors contain components classed as hazardous waste, a pre-notification was submitted to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. The collected items were then delivered to a licensed waste facility capable of recycling and processing hazardous materials safely and responsibly.

Why Are Computer Monitors Classed as Hazardous Waste?

Many people don’t realise that computer screens and display monitors are classed as hazardous electronic waste. Inside each unit are materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and flame retardants, all of which can be harmful to the environment if not handled correctly.

During the recycling process, these components are carefully dismantled and separated so that any reusable elements, including metals and circuit boards, can be recovered. The remaining hazardous materials are then treated and disposed of safely at a licensed facility. This ensures that no harmful substances enter the environment and that as much of the electronic waste as possible is recycled within Northern Ireland’s regulated waste network.

Types of Electronic Display Screens

Display screens come in a range of formats, including LCD computer monitors, LED panels, CRT monitors, shop display screens, and security monitors. These types of equipment are classed as hazardous waste because they contain components and materials that can be harmful to the environment if not handled correctly. The recycling process involves the separation of glass, extraction of metals, and removal of hazardous components before the remaining materials are processed safely.

In most cases, LCD screens and similar display units will contain elements that are deemed hazardous under WEEE legislation, meaning they must be disposed of through an approved waste facility. Whether you have office monitors, large display panels, or commercial signage systems, they all contain materials that can be harmful to the environment.
