Metal Oil Tank Removal in Ballymena (case study)
We recently completed a metal oil tank removal in Ballymena after the customer replaced their old steel heating oil tank as part of an upgrade to their heating system. Following the installation of a new plastic oil tank and boiler, the customer required the removal and disposal of the existing steel tank.

Metal Oil Tank Removal in Ballymena
The customer had been using the oil tank up until only a few weeks before the removal. During the installation of the new boiler and oil tank, their heating engineer identified that the existing tank was leaking and recommended replacement due to its age and condition. Having previously worked with the heating engineer on oil tank removals carried out under the Affordable Warmth Scheme, he passed my details on to the customer.
This was one of the more challenging steel oil tank removals that I have carried out. The tank was a large 2,500-litre steel oil tank positioned approximately three and a half to four feet above ground level. It was located in a storage area behind the garage, with access restricted by a narrow doorway. Due to the size of the tank, it was not possible to remove it in one piece and it would need to be cut into smaller sections before it could be safely removed from the property.
Before any cutting work began, the tank was dipped to determine how much heating oil remained inside. There was approximately three to four inches of oil left in the bottom of the tank. An opening was carefully cut into one end of the tank to provide access, allowing the remaining oil to be drained. A further section of the tank was then removed to gain access to the rear section of the tank and ensure that all remaining oil was removed before dismantling continued.

Tank cut to allow for draining
One of the risks associated with older steel oil tanks is corrosion, particularly on the base of the tank. In some cases, vibration caused during cutting can lead to leaks developing if the metal has significantly deteriorated. For this reason, I always ensure that as much oil as possible is removed before carrying out any major cutting work. This reduces the risk of leaks and allows the tank to be dismantled safely.
Due to the elevated position of the tank, the remaining oil inside, the restricted access and the need to cut the tank into numerous smaller sections, the removal took considerably longer than a typical steel oil tank removal at ground level. Multiple cutting blades were required to dismantle the tank and allow each section to be removed through the doorway and garage before being loaded into the van.
Once all sections of the tank had been removed, the area was left clean and tidy. The steel tank was transported for recycling and the customer was delighted to finally have the old leaking tank removed from the property.
