Polycarbonate Greenhouse Removal (case study)

A customer contacted Removerr to carry out a polycarbonate greenhouse removal in Northern Ireland. Although the structure initially appeared to be a conventional glass greenhouse, closer inspection revealed a considerably more robust construction.

From the photographs provided by the customer, the greenhouse appeared to consist of glass panels fitted within a standard aluminium frame. However, on arrival, I discovered that the panels were made from thick Perspex-style material rather than glass.

The panels were approximately 5 mm thick and, instead of being secured using conventional greenhouse glazing clips, they had been riveted directly to the aluminium framework. The frame itself was also much heavier and more rigid than that of a typical domestic greenhouse, with the individual sections securely bolted together.

Dismantling a Perspex Greenhouse

Unlike a traditional glass greenhouse, this polycarbonate greenhouse could not be dismantled using our usual removal method. On a conventional greenhouse, the glazing clips are removed first, allowing each pane of glass to be taken out safely before the aluminium frame is dismantled.

In this case, the polycarbonate sheets were fixed in such a way that they prevented access to sections of the aluminium frame. As a result, it wasn’t possible to dismantle the structure in the normal sequence. Instead, sections of the polycarbonate had to be carefully cut away at various points to expose the aluminium framework beneath.

Once enough of the frame had been exposed, we were able to use a reciprocating saw to cut through the aluminium and dismantle the greenhouse in sections. The process took around three times longer than removing a conventional glass greenhouse, largely because sections of the polycarbonate had to be cut away first before the frame could be accessed.
