Sealant and Adhesive Disposal
Recently, we were contacted by a large construction supplier based in Newry to manage the disposal of a significant volume of sealant and adhesive products. The materials included 1,231 cartridges of Morseal Black sealant, 1,139 cartridges of Morseal Grey sealant, and 192 tubs of WT1 liquid adhesive. In total, five pallets of this waste were classified as non-hazardous and could be processed under a standard waste transfer note. However, alongside this, the company also required the safe disposal of two pallets of ABR Coatings, which were identified as hazardous waste and therefore needed to be consigned separately under NIEA regulations.

This type of job highlights the complexities of dealing with sealant and adhesive waste in Northern Ireland, not all products are treated the same. While some sealant cartridges and cured adhesives fall under non-hazardous classifications, liquid adhesives and coatings often contain solvents that make them hazardous. Therefore, they must be consigned, and the NIEA must be pre-notified to track the movement of hazardous waste.
The Hazards of Disposing of Chemical Waste
Not all sealants and adhesives are created equal when it comes to disposal. Many modern industrial sealants and bulk adhesive products contain chemical compounds such as solvents, resins, and polymers. These substances can leach harmful chemicals into soil and water if they are not handled correctly, creating long-term environmental harm. Even something as common as discarded sealant cartridges can pose problems if there are residues left inside.
When products are classed as hazardous under waste regulations, they require specialist handling. Liquid sealants and coatings, for example, often need to be decanted before being shipped to incineration facilities, where the chemical waste is destroyed.
Non-hazardous waste, such as cured or empty sealant cartridges, can be managed under a standard waste transfer note and sent to licensed waste transfer stations for processing. However, commercial companies are not permitted to use public recycling centres for the disposal of chemical waste, which means they require a compliant outlet to handle larger volumes safely and legally. That’s why businesses must use licensed contractors, such as Removerr, who are equipped to deal with both hazardous and non-hazardous waste in line with NIEA regulations
